Skegness to Hull

On Friday morning (not counting EARLY Friday morning, before we got to bed) we woke to a bright sunny morning; a quick cuppa on deck showed us just how close in to Skegness we were anchored. Our grandstand view of Ingoldmells and Skeggy (Butlins and all) gave Lucy inspiration for our next exploit - Boguk Goes To Butlins! Count me in.....
We had breakfast at anchor and hoisted the mainsail, then went through the ritual of cranking the 25 metres of chain up by hand and steering the anchor flukes into the hole with a boathook; once we had sailed off our anchorage we hoisted the staysail and ran out the bowsprit and jib and sailed on our merry way.

The weather forecast promised excellent winds from the south-west, backing to south-east, but alas it proved wrong and by mid-afternoon the wind had died altogether. So once more we had to drop the sails and switch on the motor and chug steadily northwards and on into the Humber once more.

The Humber approaching Hull - left : another sailing boat awaiting permission to enter the Marina; right : the mouth of the River Hull - left, the old pier, left-centre, the tidal barrier, right-centre, The Deep, "the world's only submarium" (unquote.)

Waiting for permission to enter the Marina provided a final bit of entertainment : whilst we and another small boat waited patiently off the lock pit, a flash cruiser (otherwise known as a "floating gin palace") sped past us straight into the outer basin. While Paul hurled (justified) abuse, we silently prayed that this extremely expensive toy would beach itself and give us the last laugh. Paul's call to the harbourmaster reassured us that the culprit had been seen and would be made to wait his turn, and after a small cabin cruiser sailed out of the lock we, and the other patient little boat, were allowed in. As we were busy tying up, we noticed the harbourmaster leaving his control tower and strolling across the top of the lock gates and going off to the other side of the Marina, leaving the impatient sailor outside..... sweet revenge!

Kath and I were just about home and, along with Maggot and Graham, left Audrey there and then; the rest stayed overnight and left early next morning for their much longer drives home. I found it took some time for the world to stop swaying to and fro .... and I can't wait for next time!
