The Hopeless Guiders, minus Betty but plus Tigger.

Last night Paul had put a proposal to us : the original plan was to sail from Wisbech on the early tide, then anchor in the Humber mouth on Thursday night and sail upriver on Friday morning, arriving back at Hull Marina around 10am. He suggested that we might like to have a change of plan, and stay in Wisbech for the day, then sail on the evening tide to anchor off Skegness, sailing up the coast on Friday and arriving back at Hull around 8pm; anyone who wanted to was welcome to stay over on Audrey and drive back home on Saturday. As this gave us an extra day, we didn't take long to decide that it was a good idea, our only concern was for those who had a long drive home.

So - after breakfast we set off to explore Wisbech!

We split into two groups, Lucy, Shirley and Amanda needed to get back to Audrey fairly early as they had an "Un-Birthday Party" planned, whilst the rest of us had a free day, with instructions as to what time to be back.

Wisbech is not large, so we explored most of the town by early afternoon. We browsed through junk shops and the market, and discovered a wonderful Teddy Bear shop and just HAD to treat Flossie to a sleeping bag and Skipper to a pair of shades...... then we really needed a sit down and some refreshment.

...it SAID "coffee house" above the door, honest!!

On board Audrey in Wisbech Marina

It SAID "coffee house" above the entrance! So, we went in, gasping for a cuppa and a bun.... odd, there was a bar, beer pumps and all .... so we settled for a pint (or half) and toasties instead, plus a couple of plates of chips. Such hardship.

Then, after a pleasant hour or so, we called in at the tourist information office and spent a further fascinating hour poring over old photos! But mindful of the time, we set off back to Audrey and the U-B-Party.

"Boguk Buns" at the
Unbirthday Party...

Our intrepid cooks!

Just some of the spread
(including the Banana Boat)

Lucy, Shirley and Amanda had been really busy and had laid out a real old-fashioned kid's birthday party, complete with over-decorated buns, sandwiches, sausages-on-sticks and a chocolate blancmange rabbit on green jelly grass! Betty had baked us a Boguk cake, and once Maggot had added a Banana Boat the spread was complete!

Only the jelly wasn't like we had at parties when I was a kid - HOW much booze, Lucy? CAN you get drunk on jelly? (You can on Lucy's!)
Sunset from the River Nene - in order from left to right, progressing towards the river mouth and the Wash.
There was so much food at the party that the planned Coq-au-vin got postponed until Friday and we set off on the evening tide for the open sea once more. It was a beautiful evening, and we watched the sun set slowly as we progressed along the River Nene towards the cut and the Wash. Little did we know what was to come......
